Giacomo Martini – Film Historian and Critic

Giacomo Martini is a noted film historian and critic in Italy, in charge of the Film Office for the Emilia-Romagna region for over 30 years. He participated on numerous cultural projects regarding the History of Theater and Film with the Institute of Direction in the Arts and Music Department of the University of Bologna.

Over the years Giacomo has served as the Artistic Director of the magazine “Cinema Libero”; the Artistic Director of the Porretta Film Festival; the Artistic Director of the Bella Basilicata Film Festival ; Creative Consultant at the Sciacca Film Festival; and the Vice President of Distribuzione Indipendente“ in Rome.

He is the author and editor of hundreds of publications and monographs on the films and work of  filmmakers including Ken Loach, Francesco Rosi,  Nikita Michalkov, Marco Tullio Giordana, Theo Angelopoulos, Mario Monicelli, Bernard Tavernier, Amos Gitai, Alan Parker, Giuseppe Tornatore, Marco Bellocchio, Florestano Vancini,  Valerio Zurlini,  Michelangelo Antonioni and Tonino Guerra.

He has also written extensively on the role and function of the Cinemateque in modern culture, with particular focus on the issues of film logging, conservation and restoration of classic and important international films.
