Mary Vogt – Costume Designer

Mary Elizabeth Vogt, while still in grade school, made costumes for the Theatre Guild of Long Beach, Long Island — a beach town near Manhattan. After high school, she earned a degree from New York’s Fashion Institute of Technology, then worked briefly in advertising photography, but soon headed west, to continue her studies at the Art Center College of Design, in Pasadena, California.

Her first work in the movies was as a sketch artist. After graduation, she worked as a dyer as a checker in costume houses, an on-and-off set costumer, and eventually as assistant to several established Costume Designers. On David Lynch’s epic, DUNE, legendary designer Bob Ringwood (EXCALIBUR) hired her and she spent a very valuable year working in Mexico City at Churubusco Studios. A few years later, Ringwood asked Mary to be his co-designer on Tim Burton’s BATMAN RETURNS. Michelle Pfeiffer’s iconic Cat Woman outfit was one of the many famous pieces that came from that collaboration.

In the years since, Mary has gone on to costume design large scale fantasies, such as the three MEN IN BLACK films, with their hordes of outlandish aliens; as well as smaller fantasies, such as the beloved HOCUS POCUS, featuring her Renaissance styled witch’s robes for Bette Midler and Sarah Jessica Parker. She’s done wild comedies, with elaborate costume gags, like THE NAKED GUN: FROM THE FILES OF POLICE SQUAD and THE NAKED GUN 33 1/3: THE FINAL INSULT. She’s has done highly respected television, such as the high color fable, PUSHING DAISIES; as well as realistic, contemporary cable films such as HBO’s multi-award winning RECOUNT, for Director Jay Roach. Her latest feature drama is Warner Brothers’ Christmas 2013 release GRUDGE MATCH, starring Robert DeNiro and Sylvester Stallone. Mary has also collaborated with several Indian directors. For ENDHIRAN (2010), starring Rajnikanth and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Director Shankar asked her to create the look for a superhuman robot. That signature outfit became the key art, used to promote the film worldwide. More recently, for “SHANKARS’ I,” starring Vikram, Mary created elaborate sculptural outfits for a series of romantic fantasy dance numbers.

In 2015, Mary also designed the costumes for WAYWARD PINES, a limited series starring Matt Dillon, Carla Cugino, Terence Howard, and Melissa Leo. The science fiction mystery was directed by M. Night Shyamalan. She followed up with THE BRINK, a nightmarish political comedy directed by Jay Roach, starring Jack Black, Tim Robbins, and Carla Cugino.

In 2016, she designed the costumes for KONG: SKULL ISLAND, a reboot of the KONG films, with Brie Larson, Tom Hiddleston, Samuel L. Jackson, John Goodman, and John C. Reilly, shot in Hawaii, Australia, and Vietnam for release in 2017.

Mary designed the costumes for the period musical comedy HAIRSPRAY LIVE, written by and starring Harvey Feirstein, which was shot and broadcast simultaneously on the soundstages and backlot at Universal Studios, in Hollywood. In 2018 Mary was the costume designer on the enormously successful hit CRAZY RICH ASIANS.
