THE COURSES PROFESSIONAL SCREENWRITING (Taught in English) Instructor: Carl Haber 30 hours Mondays and Wednesdays 10:00 – 13:00 Fall course: Oct 17- Nov 16, 2016 Winter course: Jan 9 – Feb 8, 2017 Course Fee: €700 This is an intensive university level course in the craft of professional screenwriting, teaching important techniques, formats, tips, tools and tricks of writing for film and TV. Focus is on film language, screenwriting rules, structure, creating interesting characters and their development arcs, writing dialogue, writing action, understanding genre, bringing scenes to life and finding originality in your writing. Lessons are in English but script exercises can be written in Italian or English. Requirements: Students must download either “Final Draft” (FDX) or “Movie Magic Screenwriter” (MMSW) software. Giacomo Martini – Film Historian and Critic Giacomo Martini is a noted film historian and critic in Italy, in charge of the Film Office for the Emilia-Romagna region for over 30 years. He participated on numerous cultural projects regarding the History of Theater and Film with the Institute of Direction in the Arts and Music Department of the University of Bologna. Over the years Giacomo has served as the Artistic Director of the magazine “Cinema Libero”; the Artistic Director of the Porretta Film Festival; the Artistic Director of the Bella Basilicata Film Festival “; Creative Consultant at the Sciacca Film Festival; and the Vice President of “Distribuzione Indipendente“ in Rome. Andrew Thompson – Academic Executive Andrew has worked in higher education in the Italian, British and American educational systems for nearly forty years, first as a faculty member teaching English Literature and Language, then in a variety of executive and administrative roles. Currently the Director of the Rome Campus of the Lorenzo de’ Medici Institute, he has also been Executive Vice President and Chief Academic Officer of The American University of Rome, with responsibility for curriculum, curriculum development, hiring of faculty, accreditation and academic quality at this highly international American-accredited liberal arts and business college, which offers BA/BS degrees, including one in Film and Digital Media, and masters degrees. Welcome Mary Vogt to the RIFS Advisory Board

Mary Vogt – Costume Designer Mary Elizabeth Vogt, while still in grade school, made costumes for the Theatre Guild of Long Beach, Long Island -- a beach town near Manhattan.  After high school, she earned a degree from New York's Fashion Institute of Technology, then worked briefly in advertising photography, but soon headed west, to continue her studies at the Art Center College of Design, in Pasadena, California. Her first work in the movies was as a sketch artist. After graduation, she worked as a dyer as a checker in costume houses, an on-and-off set costumer, and eventually as assistant to several established Costume Designers.  On David Lynch's epic, DUNE, legendary designer Bob Ringwood (EXCALIBUR) hired her and she spent a very valuable year working in Mexico City at Churubusco Studios.  A few years later, Ringwood asked Mary to be his co-designer on Tim Burton's BATMAN RETURNS.  Michelle Pfeiffer's iconic Cat Woman outfit was one of the many famous pieces that came from...
